Sitting Your Spine to a Slow Death

by Tyler Baker on 08/15/11

Is it killing you spine to sit?... Yes!

slouching

I think it is fair to say America's past time is sitting. We sit to drive, we sit to eat, we sit for entertainment, and we sit to work. You're probably sitting right now!

What does this mean for your spine?  Bad things!

The body is build to move with over 360 joints.  Just like a tiger in the wild we are to be spending most of our time hunting and gathering for our food.  This means we are meant to be moving from sunrise to sunset, day after day.

Humans have become very sedentary and our joints are crying out for motion and movement.

Even if you exercise on a regular basis you may still be causing damage to your spine.  Here's how:

Sittting in a chair you can double the compression forces on your lumbar spine. In short periods your spine can handle this, but in time your ligaments, muscles, tendons, and bones will start to breakdown.  This will lead to back pain and spinal degeneration.  Spinal degeneration (osteoarthritis) is like a cavity on a tooth.  Only one problem…you can replace your teeth, but you can not replace your spine.

So what can you do to help minimize that damage we do to our spines?

Get a chiropractic adjusment….of course!  This helps restore lost motion to the joints, muscles, and ligaments helping them work properly.  Everyone without symptoms should have a regular adjustment at least 4 to 6 times a year.  Some people with more chronic conditions may need more frequent visits.

Try to stand and walk more.  Some people are changing their work desk to a standing unit.

If you have to sit in a chair, get up and move around at least every 30 minutes.  Set a timer because 30 minutes goes by fast.

While sitting in a chair, be sure your butt is all the way to the very back of the seat so that you are not slouching.  This makes the compression forces in your spine worse.

If you think your back has been damaged from long periods of sitting, make sure to call our office for an exam to check out your spine's motion, stability, and balance.

Omaha Chiropractor Carries New Custom Foot Orthotics

by Tyler Baker on 06/14/11

Foot orthotics are custom-made inserts that fit inside your shoes.  They are engineered to help correct abnormal motions in the foot.  The job of foot orthotics are to help tell your foot where to move much like the rails of a train track. In turn foot orthotics will help restore your balance, improve sports performance, and can help improve your foot, back, and leg pain.

Who needs custom foot orthotics?

Custom orthotics benefit people who suffer from abnormal foot alignment and function.  Health professionals tend to talk about those with flat feet, but the foot is more complicated than that.  Custom orthotics can help those with high arches, low arches, knocked knees, bow legs, pigeon-toes.

They also can help those who use there feet more.  People who stand excessively at work will benefit from an increase in comfort. Those active in sports will benefit from an increase in endurance, performance and strength.

It is important to have a professional screen you to find out if an orthotic will benefit you.  In our office, we use different functional tests to help identify how your feet are performing, and how the orthotics have helped when they are placed in your shoes. This is unique and not found in other offices.

How are custom orthotics made?

I use a casting system to make an imprint of your foot.  This is not your ordinary imprint. It is necessary to take a cast of your foot at maximum supination (Foot Arching).  This will make sure that you get the support your foot needs.  This process takes about 10 to 15 minuets and your orthotics can be ready with in 1-2 weeks.

How long will these orthotics last?

The materials used in our custom orthotics are very durable and built to last for 3 to 5 years.  At this time it is recommended that you have your feet checked up again to make sure they are doing their job.

How much do these orthotics cost?

Most Doctors will chare between $300-$500 for custom orthotics.  Our office will provide a foot assessment, casting, and testing with any changes for $249.00.  This is an exceptional value not found elsewhere.  I’m so confident in these orthotics I will also give you a 30 day money back guarantee if you aren’t satisfied for any reason.

Call to make and appointment today and stop further damage to your body.

May is Correct Posture Month!

by Tyler Baker on 05/16/11

Picture this,
The sun is out, the birds are chirping, and you are working on your yard, garden, or house when a sharp pain lights up your back. You call your chiropractor and make an appointment.

After an exam your chiropractor explains that you have a sprain/strain in you back that was caused by poor posture when performing your sping time tasks.

Could this have been prevented?  Absolutley.  Most of the joint problems I see in my office have been traced back to two reasons:

1) Poor posture and ergonomics while at home or work.

2) Decreased physical activity leading to a loss of core bacing muscles strength.

May is offically correct posture month.  Here are some tips to help you keep on the straight and narrow!

1.  Try not to sit in a chair for more than 20 minuets with out a break.

2.  When sitting in a chair, make sure to push your butt as far back into the seat as possible.

3.  Keep all computers close to your body and moitors high enough so you are not looking too far down or too far up.

4.  Bring your shoulder DOWN and back, not up and back.

5.  When lifing or standing up from a chair, use your butt and bend at the hips.  Keep your back straight and locked.

6. When pushing anything use your hips, butt, and legs.  Do not use your arms to push.  Use them only to grasp and manuever.

7.  Be aware of your posture. Have your friends look out for you too.  Many times other can see you poor posture better than you do.

8.  Have a trained professional  help improve your posture.
